The fishing the past week has been nothing short of amazing! As my clients said, “this was the best walleye fishing we have ever had” and “I had no idea walleye fishing could be this good so close to the Twin Cities”. Then there is my personal favorite, “this is better than Canada!” Our average size has been excellent with 15”-20” keepers coming to the boat, as well as numerous fish over 20” to take pictures of.
With the warming water temps the walleye are getting more aggressive and sliding deeper, 15’-20’. A couple weeks ago the walleye wanted predominantly minnows, but now they will happily take a leech or night crawler. The techniques I’ve been using are just as vast with nearly everything working at some point. My favorite techniques have been a, jig/minnow, Lindy rig/leech, bobber/leech or a #5 crank bait trolled shallow after dark. All of these techniques have produced good walleye over the past week.
The fish are congregated in or near the new weed growth, so look for weedy areas and you will most certainly locate the fish. This weed bite typically lasts until July, so get the family out on the water and enjoy some great fishing!
