Variety of Fish on the Bite for Late August

There is a pretty strong mixed bag of fish being caught in the Alexandra area right now. The sunfish and crappie bites seem to be the most consistent, while the walleye action remains fair for most anglers. For every great day of walleye fishing there seems to be another day where the bite is much tougher. This is common for late August and September, so don’t get discouraged there are plenty of walleye to be caught!
The panfish are being found suspended over 10-12’ weeds on many of the lakes. Trolling a small jig and spinner, small jig and a plastic or jig and a minnow at .5 – 1.0 mph has been producing a lot of crappie and sunfish. The average size crappies have been 10”-12”. The walleye have still been going well on leeches and night crawlers. Near the weeds or in the weeds is where I’m locating most of them. My best depth has been 12-22 feet of water. On the slower days we are catching a lot of smaller walleye 12-15” and on the better days we still catch quite a few walleye only the size increases significantly to 15”-20”.
With the cooler temps forecasted I expect some of my fall tactics will kick into high gear very soon. Smallmouth will soon go on a fall feeding binge like no other. This time of year it’s hard for me to have anything else on my mind. These hard fighters are eager to eat and will continue to eat well into October until they are nearly round in shape. There are very few fish that offer the excitement that these fish do! If you like aggressive hard fighting fish than get ready because the best smallmouth fishing of the year is right around the corner!
