Nothing says fall like a pumpkin patch, celebration of apple harvest, carved pumpkin contest, zombie pub crawl, a costume party and strolling through a quaint and festive downtown. What if I told you ALL that and more can be found in one weekend in Alexandria over EM break (aka: MEA weekend)? It’s true! Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a fun get-away!
Most people in Minnesota know about EM break (Education Minnesota Professional Conference). Most school-goers simply know it as a 4-day weekend. What better time to plan a little fall trip! In Alexandria, the fun may begin with a visit to the Pumpkin Patch at Erickson’s Petting Zoo. They have special hours on this weekend: Open 10am-5pm Thursday-Saturday and 12-5pm on Sunday (Oct 16th-19th). All other weeks they are open Sat-Sun.
Here you will find something in every corner. Pet and feed the cute animals in their petting zoo, find your way through the corn maze, take a family picture at one of their nice fall themed sets, get a ride on a pony, take a trolley ride out to the pick-your-own pumpkin patch, stroll through the beautiful yard and shop a large variety of pumpkins and gourds. A great family outing!
On Friday, October 17th, downtown Alexandria comes alive with a new event called The Thing on Broadway. Construction has taken place all summer to make downtown even better than it was before, and now we are celebrating! Festivities include a Carved Pumpkin Contest, Scavenger Hunt and a 21+ Costume Bash in the evening. Over $1,000 worth of great prizes to be given away! All events are FREE! More information can be found here.
On Saturday, October 18th, head out to Carlos Creek Winery for Applefest, their celebration of the apple harvest. You will find fun for the entire family! Catapult Demonstrations, Horse Drawn Wagon Rides, Kid’s Pie Eating Contest and Activities, Apples for Sale, Live Music and more! AND, of course, make sure to sample the wine. Admission is FREE, visit their website for more information.
Then it’s time to get spooky with the annual Alexzombia pub crawl. Saturday night, put on your best zombie face and join in the horror. This 21+ event goes from bar to bar for specials and zombie-riffic fun! You must register for this event, so click here for more information.
