As is the tradition every year atAndes Tower Hills, they celebrate the end of the skiing/snowboarding season with their Spring Fling weekend. Only this year, despite their recent event, the season is far from over. Because of the tremendous amount of snow base, their tentative schedules runs each Saturday until May 6th. This weekend (Easter weekend) they’ll be open both Friday, April 7th and Saturday April 8th from 10a-5p.
The Spring Fling couldn’t have been met with better weather, at least for spectators. Saturday’s temperature was barely over freezing at 33 degrees, but the clear blue skies and bright sunshine made it feel like the upper 40’s. Still the fun went on. First on the docket for Spring Fling activities was the radar run. Warmer snow meant for a little “stickier” snow, but still the top speeds down Hollywood High reached near 50 MPH.
It’s been a while since I’ve skied, so I absolutely loved seeing the variety of ages competing. From fearless 10 years olds to those with about five or six times as many trips around the sun. At 2:00pm a number of Andes staff members kicked off the downhill garbage bag races. Again, the competition came down the face of Hollywood High with the competitors sliding down on their stomachs using nothing but their winter clothes inside a garbage bag (with their heads sticking out the bottom).
The last competition of Saturday was the long-standing tradition of the pond plunge. Competitors cruised down Hollywood High (one of 15 other downhill runs and a Terrain park) and tried to skip across the newly created pond. The pond was created about 80 feet away from the chalet, making for a great spectator sport. The crowd gathered in around the pond on the sides and the judges sat up against the chalet flashing their scores after each run. I am not going to attempt to go into much detail but there were a few unique costumes including a Telletubbie, a Batman costume, the scary Michael Myers, lots of shorts
Sunday the fun began again with more radar runs, and metal runner sled races on the bunny hill.
