(Alexandria, MN) We’ve all been talking about how the winter cold is just not ready to give up yet, and it’s already May! Despite the miserable weather of April, there is new life as we begin May. A few tulips are starting to bloom, the grass is starting to green up, the golf courses are all open for the season, and some docks are going in around the lakes area. The forecast calls for sun and mid-50’s by Tuesday afternoon, with temps steadily in the 60’s as we get closer to the weekend.
Explore Alexandria Tourism has been around for more than 20 years beginning as Alexandria Hotel & Hospitality, but tourism in Alexandria has been a pivotal part of the area’s stability and growth for over a century. Spend any time in the Legacy of the Lakes Museum or the Douglas County Historical Society and you can see the evolution of tourism. This week is National Travel and Tourism Week.
Obviously all of those months when the world was locked up because of COVID led to an increased demand for travel in the past year. Greater Minnesota, including Alexandria, actually even saw a new all-time high in revenue at lodging properties during 2021. Much of that growth took place in the second half of last year. The increased cost of doing business accompanied that as well, but the traffic to the area is a really good sign for the future of tourism in Douglas County.
At Explore Alexandria Tourism we are getting ready for the upcoming tourism season. Our new Executive Director, Joe Korkowski, began in January and is excited to welcome in visitors to the place he’s called home since first taking a job in television back in 1990 at KSAX-TV. In mid-April Amy Lohse was added to the team as the Development and Services Coordinator. She also grew up in West-Central Minnesota and has years of customer service throughout her life. Our office is located at 324 Broadway Street, right in beautiful downtown Alexandria and we look forward to helping guide people on their vacations or with their conventions and gatherings.
Each year our office takes calls and emails from all over the country from people eager to come visit the land of sky blue waters. Although the largest share of our inquiries come from the Twin Cities metro area, we are seeing interest from all corners of the United States. The most popular request is for our Visitor Guides. We have maps and brochures that describe in better detail all there is to do, places to stay, restaurants to enjoy and much more. As the sun starts to finally warm us up a little more this week, the trees will bud, the grass will fill in, a few boats will take their maiden voyages for 2022, and we will officially kick-off another tourist season in the Alexandria Lakes Area.
