Explore Alexandria’s History

Did you know that Alexandria is home to what the National Register of Historic Places calls “Outstate Minnesota’s largest and most intact late 19th/early 20th century residential district?” The Alexandria Residential Historic District, also referred to as the “Silk Stocking Neighborhood” due to the affluence of its founders, has more than 50 houses listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Walk through the neighborhood or immerse yourself in the history by staying at the Cedar Rose Inn, a bed and breakfast in the historic district built in 1903 by Noah P. Ward.

As you explore Alexandria, listen to Douglas County Historical Society’s podcasts. Topics include the history of Broadway, stories from Lake Darling, and the history of everyone’s favorite Viking, Big Ole.

The Legacy of the Lakes Museum celebrates the rich traditions and legacies of the lakes and the many generations of families who have enjoyed the resorts, cabins, and activities offered by Minnesota’s lakeside communities. From the establishment of the Minnesouri Club on Lake Miltona in 1890 to the evolution of boats, the museum’s exhibits provide a historical understanding of the lakeside life that continues to this day.

Finally, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to dine at The Depot Smokehouse & Tavern. Originally constructed in 1907 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Depot was a prominent railway station until the discontinuation of passenger service to Alexandria in 1967. Enjoy the historical surroundings while enjoying mouthwatering dishes like brisket tortellini, smokehouse ribs, and a smoked Cuban sandwich.
