World’s Largest Trapshooting Event Takes Over Alexandria For Nine Days
June 13, 2023    //    Joe Korkowski
Alexandria, MN – Each year thousands of people come from all over Minnesota for the annual Clay Target League Trapshooting Championships. The growth of the sport has resulted in the number of entrants to rise above 8000 for the first time in the tournament’s history! Although USA Clay Target League hosts dozens of other state tournaments throughout the country, and most are rapidly growing, Minnesota still holds the title as the world’s largest. The nearly 8200 participants from 333 Minnesota teams are both boys and girls high school student athletes. The Alexandria Shooting Park in Alexandria, MN is the host site for the event. It features 20 trap fields along with skeet, 5 stand and 3D archery ranges. There are nine classes based on the number of participants in the school’s trapshooting program. Therein lies the beauty of this sport. A large metropolitan school may have a large enrollment, but if their trapshooting participation is small in comparison, they could be facing off with some of the smallest schools in the state. Because of the equal playing field that trapshooting provides, students of all athletic abilities are able to toe the line and compete. There are up to three levels of participation for both girls and boys; Novice, Jr. Varsity and Varsity.
