Snow, Cooler Temps Welcome Signs

A frozen lake in the Alexandria Lakes Area features snow-covered ice, intersected by a road; winding tire or walking tracks cross the snowy surface, with open water near the shore and a partly cloudy blue sky above.

Hey, it looks like Winter in the Alexandria Lakes Area! I think most people who live in this state appreciate the snow, and if you like to ice fish, you certainly appreciate cooler temps to solidify those 350+ lakes in Douglas County. Even though we have had a see-saw December that provided us with unusually warm temperatures and even several inches of rain around Christmas time, it looks as though Mother Nature is starting to normalize. With the recent three to four inches of snow over the past few days, there is at least a base that gives snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers a little hope that there will still be a season of fun for them too. Luckily Andes Tower Hills has been able to make their own snow throughout the season and is doing quite well in being able to provide outdoor fun for people.

Back to snow and ice across “all” of Douglas County. Here is a look at a location within the Alexandria Chain of Lakes from along County Road 42 between Lake Carlos and Lake Le Homme Dieu. It provides a little perspective into what winter looks like so far in this area. This video was taken before 3-4 inches of new snow fell on Monday.

A quick look at the Chain of Lakes from above, just prior to Monday’s 3-4 inches of new snow.

We will be going out in the near future with Douglas County Deputies as they check ice depth and ice stability in the area, but in the meantime, use extreme caution as the recent snowfall may disguise or hide some troubled areas. We understand the excitement to get out there and fish as the lakes are filled with a wide variety of freshwater fish.
