March 2024 is bringing us a lot of reasons to celebrate… St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, the first day of Spring. But, for the entire month, we get to honor women for Women’s History Month. This annual observance serves as a platform to celebrate the achievements, contributions, and experiences of women throughout history. What began as a week-long commemoration in the 1980’s is now an entire month-long. This just goes to show the powerful impact women have.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, the team at Explore Alexandria had the idea to bring women together for their assistance on an inspiring endeavor… the recreation of a historic photo that originally features some of the male workers of Alexandria.
Brittany Johnson, the Executive Director of the Douglas County Historical Society estimates the photo to be taken in the 1930’s, almost 100 years ago! The initiative not only honors the legacy of the past, but also highlights the incredible reality: downtown Alexandria is predominantly women-owned.
We successfully gathered as many women in business as we could to recreate the photo in the same location on 6th Ave. From boutique shops to thriving restaurants and wineries, these women-owned businesses contribute to the vibrancy and diversity of the City of Alexandria.
The photo recreation serves as a powerful visual representation of the progress towards gender equality in entrepreneurship and emphasizes the importance of recognizing and supporting women’s contributions to the economic landscape.
