Happy 50th Birthday, Big Ole!

Statue of Big Ole, a Viking with a helmet and shield reading “Minnesota Birthplace of America?” The Viking has a blonde beard, wears armor, and stands proudly under a clear sky—perfect for celebrating his happy 50th birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIG OLE! A true landmark for the Alexandria Area, residents and visitors alike take pride and have fun with our 28 foot tall statue standing guard on the shores of Lake Agnes. As a symbol of a unique and controversial American discovery story, one thing is for sure…Big Ole is also a symbol of our community through time. While his 50 year history has been challenging at times, Alexandria has always and will always rise up for our favorite giant Viking!

Just in time for his 50th Birthday present, Big Ole is now due for another round of maintenance and repairs. Just recently in June 2015 an additional problem was discovered. A bird nest was found in a rotted spot on Ole’s shoulder as they were looking at his overall health. The Runestone Museum is looking for help funding these repairs. Please consider giving a donation to Big Ole’s doctor bill! It’s super easy and can be done online. You can find more information and donate here.
