Happy 50th Birthday, Big Ole!

Statue of Big Ole, a Viking with a helmet and shield reading “Minnesota Birthplace of America?” The Viking has a blonde beard, wears armor, and stands proudly under a clear sky—perfect for celebrating his happy 50th birthday.

Big Ole met some challenging times in 1996 when he was removed from his pedestal in the fall for some much needed repairs. The repairs to his outer structure, interior and new paint job were near completion when the building he was being repaired in collapsed from heavy snow on the roof. He suffered a broken leg and internal damage from the accident. When Ole was ready to be returned to his post, a community celebration was held on May 25, 1997. The celebration was called Ole Oppe Fest, which means “Ole Up” in Norwegian. Included in the festivities were carnival games, entertainment, food courts, fireworks and a street dance to celebrate the unveiling of the newly repaired Ole. Ole Oppe Fest continues every year as a Memorial Day weekend celebration.

Big Ole was moved one more time in 2002, to his current location, on the south shore of Lake Agnes at the trail head of the Central Lakes Trail and Big Ole Park.
