Snow Melt And Ice Fishing

March 9, 2014    //

sunnies and crappies for dinner

Today we hit a high temp of 40 degrees, and with the sun being so powerful, it melted snow quickly.  It was a gorgeous day to be on the ice… and get a tan!  The lakes area was busy with many people fishing and the lakes are in excellent shape.  The ice is over 36” thick and an auger extension is needed in some areas to make it through the thick ice.  Fishing was very good most of the winter and continues to be very good.  Even with the cooler temps we had this past month fishing was good, but with warm sunny skies today the fishing seemed to be even better.  This is a very enjoyable time to be on the ice, the fishing is great and the weather is fantastic.  From now until ice out the fishing will continue to be great.

The fish are still in 15-25’ water near deep water.  During the day the sunfish and crappie prefer a small #12 horizontal jig like the Lindy toad tipped with a couple euro larva.  Once the sun goes down the sunfish bite slows and the minnow bite for crappie gets hot.  Last night with not a lot of effort it was fairly easy to ice 60+ crappie ranging from 9”-12” long.  These are perfect eating size crappie.  We will have great ice conditions for quite a while yet, so don’t hesitate to get out there.  Keep checking back and I will keep you up to date as the ice conditions change.
