For more than 60 years, Big Ole has welcomed visitors to Alexandria.

Standing 28 feet tall on the shores of Lake Agnes, the giant Viking has become one of Minnesota’s most iconic landmarks and a popular photo opportunity for visitors.

Originally created for the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair, Big Ole accompanied the Kensington Runestone to New York before returning to Alexandria, where he has become a lasting symbol of the area’s Scandinavian heritage.

Now, the Runestone Museum Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to support the restoration and preservation of Big Ole.

Donors who give $1 or more can vote on his new hair color: blonde, gray, red or brunette.

Explore Alexandria Tourism will match donations dollar-for-dollar, up to $6,000, until the fundraising goal has been met.

To vote, donate or learn more about the campaign, visit the Stand Tall With Big Ole Fund website.
