Summer Fishing Techniques

summer fishing techniques - nice sized walleye

I’ve listed below a bunch of great summer fishing techniques for the most common fish in the Alexandria area. With an edge on the fish and a little perseverance you should be able to catch a few limits!
Weed growth is dense, so the best place to find almost all species right now is on the outside weed line in 16’-22’ feet of water (FOW)

Walleye – are biting well, but at times inconsistent.  This is very normal for this time of year.  One night the bite is excellent and the next it can be slower.  Walleye are most often caught in the low light periods, at dusk and dawn.  If the conditions are choppy or overcast the chance for a good bite is much greater.  The majority of the walleye are being found on the outside weed edge in 16’-22’ FOW. (see pic below)  Slowly trolling a Lindy rig with a lively leech or night crawler has been producing the best.  Trolling a crankbait like a Lindy Shadling has also been doing very well for walleye.

Depth finder

Sunfish – have been biting well all day long, right on the weed edge in 16’22’ FOW.  Some people are surprised at the depth I fish sunfish, but I seem to find much nicer fish at this depth.  Sunfish are easily located while fishing for walleye with a Lindy rig and a night crawler.  Or by trolling a small Lindy spinner and a hair jig. (shown below)  These techniques allow me to cover more water while searching for nice sunfish.  Once I’ve found quality fish I’ll usually switch over to a more typical way of fishing sunfish like a slip bobber/jig and worm set up.

Summer fishing techniques

Bass / Northern – are aggressive and caught many different ways.  I catch a fair amount of them just fishing for walleye but a great way to target both of these species is with a 4-5” minnow.  I like to use a modified Lindy rig in this presentation.  I use a 1/2oz weight, swivel and 3’ flexible wire leader.  Then I’ll tie on a 2/0 hook and tip it with a sucker minnow.  Troll this minnow about 3-5’ of bottom right on the weed line and it will be “fish on” in no time.  This is one of my favorite techniques when just catching fish is the main goal.

All of the above techniques are working well right now so come on up to Alexandria and have some fun!
